I've been hearing about vets pushing a Brucellosis vaccinations on our dogs so I did a bit of research.
First thing to know is that brucellosis affects the reproductive organs of dogs in the rare cases that they become infected. Thus, neutered dogs are not at risk.
Secondly, those dogs that do contract a variation of brucellosis, are usually around livestock - not a major issue for our city dogs in Edinburgh. Though, if you live on the outskirts this is something to bear in mind as it is a very difficult infection to treat and can result in lifelong antibiotics.
Primary signs are complications during a dog's pregnancy for girls, and swelling around the gonads for boys resulting in a reluctance to mate.
Control of the infection is based on isolation of infected dogs and testing of dogs before breeding them.
This information has come from the MSD Veterinary Manual: Here is the Pet Owner's version;
And the professional version;
Also note that this is not considered a core vaccination, and therefore, unless there is an outbreak going on, there is no significant benefit to vaccinating your dog against brucellosis other than spending more money at the vets.
