My girl was spayed yesterday and as we live in a first floor flat, had to be carried upstairs. Thank goodness she didn't need a toilet break during the night!
Nova is already crate trained so she was popped into her crate with her dinner and I settled into my bed next to her.
Now it's time to start the day and I am considering how I will ensure Nova doesn't do any strenuous physical activity while we have dogs in the car for dog walks. First step, carry her outside for her morning toilet break. Then back in and get ready, or I may pop her in the car and she can wait there while I get ready.
During the day, on lead toilet breaks only. I will take some nice chews for her to munch on while I do my dog walks.
I won't have much of a problem keeping Nova on crate rest because we have practiced quiet days a number of times. Although we have a busy week and Nova does 1 to 2 hours of exercise up to 5 days a week, the weekends are chill time. We do toilet breaks and maybe a short walk but only with her.
It is very important to mix up the routine and have these days where you don't go for a big walk and your pup can just chill in the house with you. Not only for occasions where there is a medical need to, but also to destress, relax and rest.
Every dog needs this whether they are a working dog or a lap dog, whether they are high or low energy.
Nova is a siberian husky and super fit, but the first thing I taught her as an 8 week old puppy, was how to relax and chill out.
Relaxing and toy play are my biggest priorities for any puppy and they will be super helpful during this recovery time for Nova.
Ensure your pup has the skills to relax to set yourself up for success not just with surgery recovery, but every day life too!
