Winter Dog Walking Gear

Dog walking is wonderful in the summer, even in Scotland. But autumn and winter are another story. Wet, windy and muddy, but with the right clothing it can be just as wonderful as walking in the summer.

First of all, you need a good first layer, thermals especially when winter really sets in.

The nicest ones I've found at from Tog 24, thin but warm, skin-tight cotton and reasonably priced.

I also love their merino wool socks

To go with either waterproof walking boots, I find the fit of Solomon boots most comfortable for myself. I bought these most recently;

And for when the weather is really wet, my muck boots are my favourite

A decent waterproof jacket is a must, but when it's really cold and windy, a ski jacket will work much better

and finally, waterproof, and scratch proof trousers. I've worn these ones for years and they are still hole free and waterproof with regular re-proofing.

All of these items are not cheap, but they are durable and I have only had to buy them once, with the exception of the socks which did become holey after 18 months or so.

With these items, I can continue full-time dog walking in comfort. The odd occasion that I have been completely drenched is unavoidable but the hot shower when you get home after a days work is almost worth it!

What are you favourite items of clothing/gear for walking your dog(s) in the wetter months?
